There are not many telescope where, if something breaks, you get out the wood glue, but that's what you get with a Sunspotter. Not that something is likely to break; they are very sturdily made. Once you understand how to point it at the Sun (full instructions are printed onto the telescope) it's easy to use. We find that people get the hang of it very quickly.
Above the Venus transit of 2004 on a Sunspotter. Below the same shot processed. You can just see a filament in the upper right quarter.
One of the neatest things is that you do need to keep adjusting the telescope. You can actually see the Sun creep of the paper screen. It really makes you appreciate that we are living on a revolving planet. Sunspots show up very well but because of the high level of ambient light don't expect to easily see other detail. It's also easy to get a picture of your observations with a digital camera. The result will be a bit squashed but is easy to un-squash in a computer. Paint will do it (in windows accessories).
